STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State's defense has faced several challenges during its four-game winning streak, but linebacker Tate Romney believes Saturday's matchup against Houston could present one of the toughest tests yet.
With the Cowboys preparing to visit the Cougars , Romney emphasized Houston's ability to establish its running game, distribute the football and generate explosive plays.
"One of the best offenses we've faced so far," Romney said during Oklahoma State's weekly media availability. "They're balanced and love to run the football."
For an Oklahoma State defense coming off a 42-28 victory over UCF, the challenge will be maintaining the discipline and communication necessary to slow down a Houston offense capable of attacking in multiple ways.
Despite Houston's success through the air with quarterback Conner Weigman, Romney identified the Cougars' rushing attack as a primary concern.
"They're really efficient with that, and what we have to really focus on is stopping the run," Romney said.
Houston's offensive balance creates difficult decisions for opposing defenses. A productive running game can force defenders closer to the line of scrimmage, potentially creating opportunities for explosive plays elsewhere.
Romney understands that Oklahoma State cannot afford to lose track of its assignments while attempting to contain Houston's playmakers.
"A lot of playmakers, so stop the explosives," Romney said.
That responsibility extends beyond the Cowboys' defensive front. Linebackers and defensive backs must work together to prevent successful runs from becoming substantial gains and limit opportunities for Houston's skill-position players in space.
Oklahoma State's defense demonstrated its ability to respond to adversity against UCF. After allowing 21 first-half points, the Cowboys surrendered just seven after halftime, helping Oklahoma State pull away for its fourth consecutive victory. The Knights managed only 30 rushing yards in the second half, reflecting the Cowboys' improved execution following halftime adjustments.
However, Houston presents a different challenge. The Cougars enter Saturday leading the FBS in third-down conversion percentage, making it particularly important for Oklahoma State to avoid allowing sustained drives.
Romney believes the Cowboys have already demonstrated their ability to stop the run and get off the field when their assignments are executed correctly.
"We've shown we can stop the run," Romney said. "If we can communicate, then we don't have a hard time stopping third-down conversions."
For Romney, Oklahoma State's defensive success ultimately depends on all 11 players operating together.
"Really, it just comes down to everyone being on the same page and playing fast," Romney said.
That message becomes particularly important against a Houston offense that combines physical running with multiple receiving threats.
The Cowboys enter Saturday at 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Big 12 play, looking to extend their winning streak to five games.
With Oklahoma State continuing to develop under first-year head coach Eric Morris, Saturday provides another opportunity for the defense to demonstrate its growth against a formidable conference opponent.
The Cowboys and Cougars kick off at 6:30 p.m. CT on FOX.
For Romney and the Oklahoma State defense, the priorities are straightforward: stop the run, communicate effectively and prevent Houston from creating explosive plays.
