As the Jacksonville Jaguars search for answers in their defensive end rotation, perhaps an under-the-radar name to watch for during training camp is UDFA Bryan Thomas Jr.
John Shipley of Jaguars on SI put together his list of UDFAs to watch over the summer, and Thomas was included after a strong showing during the spring.
"Bryan Thomas Jr. has the build and athletic ability to make a statement during the preseason when he is due to get plenty of reps." Shipley wrote.
During his final season at South Carolina, Thomas recorded a career-high 38 pressures and seven sacks, according to PFF . He has been a fairly sound tackler, and for what it's worth, he's graded out well against the run by PFF's metrics.
While Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker lead the way at defensive end, this is a heavily rotated position where four or even five players see regular snaps. How that rotation behind those two shakes out and whether or not the Jaguars can get consistent production from those players remains to be seen.
That uncertainty creates an opportunity for a UDFA like Thomas to stand out, but admittedly, it's a crowded room as well. Likely ahead of him on the depth chart at the moment are second-year pass rushers Danny Striggow and BJ Green, along with recent draft picks Wesley Williams and Zach Durfee.
Thomas faces an uphill battle when it comes to making the team, but we did see just last year both Striggow and Green make the team as UDFAs.
