The transfer portal has become almost as important as the regular season in college football, and that is more true at the quarterback position than anywhere. The portal movement at quarterback this offseason was as crazy as ever and the head coaching carousel had a big impact on a number of decisions.
After a terrible couple of seasons, Oklahoma State brought in North Texas head coach Eric Morris to take the same position with the Cowboys. The Mean Green was very good last season and had one of the most explosive offenses in all of college football, led by star quarterback Drew Mestemaker.
When Morris went to Stillwater, all eyes turned to Mestemaker and where he would end up next season. After being heavily recruited in the transfer portal, the rising sophomore ended up with his old coach at Oklahoma State.
However, the Cowboys had to work for it. Morris recently revealed that Oregon and two top SEC schools were in the mix for Mestemaker this offseason, via On3 Sports.
"Everybody knew Oregon and Texas A&M and LSU wanted him," Morris said.
Instead, Mestemaker will join a number of his standout North Texas teammates for what they hope is a resurgent season at Oklahoma State. The Big 12 isn't exactly known for its great defenses, which should allow Oklahoma State to put up big numbers on offense next season.
The buzz around Oklahoma State is only going to grow heading into next season as Mestemaker draws more and more NFL Draft buzz. The 6-foot-4 gunslinger is a potential first-round pick and has been mocked as high as the top 10 in the 2027 draft by some analysts. Last season, he competed 68.9% of his passes and led the nation with 4,379 passing yards. He also tacked on 34 touchdowns with just nine interceptions.
Mestemaker may not be a household name in the college football world just yet, but he was one of the best quarterbacks last season. If he can keep up that production in the Power Four, it won't be long before he is one of the stars of the sport.
