A Thursday doubleheader ended in a split between the Baltimore Orioles and Houston Astros . Nevertheless, the Orioles secured a series win with a 10-3 win over the Astros in the matinee game on Thursday afternoon. During the win, Baltimore Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer was in the broadcast booth, breaking down the matchup. While in the booth, Palmer was brought some chicken wings to try. According to team beat reporter Andy Kostka on X, formerly Twitter, it was the first time that Palmer had tried a chicken wing.
“Actually, these are pretty good,” remarked Palmer while enjoying the wing. “Look at what I missed all these years.”

Universally accepted as one of the best culinary inventions in recent memory, chicken wings and sports go together as well as peanut butter and jelly. Watching Palmer, one of the best pitchers in major league history, try his first wing was certainly a treat. In a blowout like Thursday’s win, taking the time to see something as fun as that is just one reason why the sport is fun to watch.
The series win over the Astros could be a big boost for the Orioles. Despite their 15-16 record, Baltimore is only five games behind the division-leading New York Yankees . With a pivotal weekend series against the Yankees looming, getting back on the winning track should help the O’s odds of climbing back into playoff contention. While there are still 131 games left in the season, hopefully, there will be more Orioles wins in which Palmer tries out something new. Watching a Hall of Famer chow down on wings like the rest of us is always a hoot to behold.
