The Baltimore Orioles and Washington Nationals made history on Tuesday, and it had nothing to do with their specific games during the day. Rather, the O's and Nationals made a trade with each other for the first time in their histories , according to Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic.
"For the very first time in their histories, the Nationals and Orioles have made a trade: The Nats have acquired RHP Kyle Nicolas in exchange for INF Randal Diaz. Nicolas was optioned to Triple-A Rochester," Nusbaum reported.
The trade itself will not catch much attention, but it is historic nonetheless.
Nicolas, 27, is a right-handed pitcher who has turned in a 4.96 ERA across 93 career big league appearances. He was traded from the Cincinnati Reds to the Orioles earlier this season, but he did not appear in any big league contests with the O's.
Diaz, a shortstop, has yet to make his big league debut. He has recorded a career slash line of .235/.332/.320 across 164 total minor league games.
The Orioles have dealt with injuries this season , so adding depth to the roster makes sense. The Nationals are a surprise contender, so bringing in pitching depth is also understandable. The Nationals still may sell before the trade deadline , but they also could look to compete this season.
Fans probably should not expect the Orioles and Nationals to make any trades soon, but anything is possible. However, the fact that it had not happened before Wednesday suggests it may be a while before we see it again.
