The Baltimore Orioles found themselves trailing by a run entering the ninth inning of their Monday matchup against the Kansas City Royals . Then, catcher Samuel Basallo hit an RBI single to send the game into extra innings.
He hit another RBI single in the 12th after the Royals tied the game. Then, a Leody Tavarez grand slam put the final nail in the coffin, giving the Orioles a 7-5 win. Basallo knows Baltimore’s comeback attitude is a staple of who they want to be , via Robert Falkoff of MLB.com.
“I wasn’t trying to do too much or play the hero,” Basallo said through interpreter Brandon Quinones. “Our mentality is not to give up until the last out is made. We are going to go out there and fight. We aren’t going to give in.”
Basallo ranked as the top prospect in the Orioles’ organization and No. 13 in all of baseball in 2025, via MLB Pipeline. Now a full-time major leaguer , Baltimore is counting on him to be a crucial member of their lineup for the foreseeable future.
Through his first 17 games in 2026, Basallo is hitting .167 with three home runs and six RBIs. while his numbers have yet to jump off the page, the catcher is still just 21-years-old. He hit .283 with 73 home runs, 269 RBIs and 24 stolen bases over 401 minor league games. The Orioles aren’t close to hitting the panic button on Basallo.
Especially when he has performances like he did on Monday. They’re hopeful his never-give-up attitude permeates throughout the whole lineup. And if Basallo is leading the charge, maybe his bat heats up further along the way.
