- Packers’ 6-foot-5 tight end may need to play his way onto the roster
The Packers are clearly looking for the right combination at tight end near the bottom of the roster.
Whether as an insurance policy on Tucker Kraft getting back up to full speed, or that Luke Musgrave has reached a ceiling after an injury-prone start to his career, Jonnu Smith 's signing sent ripples through Green Bay 's tight ends room.

Green Bay Packers tight end Tucker Kraft (85) runs onto the field before the game against the Carolina Panthers on Nov. 2, 2025, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis.
Smith's arrival may put tight end Drake Dabney in a position wheree his performance against the Cardinals could make-or-break his chances of making the roster.
"If the Packers' three tight ends on the 53-man roster were going to be players who competed during training camp, then Drake Dabney pretty obviously was going to win the No. 3 job," wrote Bill Huber of Packers OnSI . "After the addition of Smith? Who knows."
Dabney, 6-foot-5 and 246 pounds, caught 84 passes across five collegiate seasons at Baylor and TCU, for 1,066 yards and eight touchdowns.
Smith brings veteran experience and solid depth to the position looking for consistency behind Kraft.
However, Dabney could be a player to watch either way, as an undrafted free agent there's always the chance that if the Packers do waive him, he could return to the practice squad.
