- Packers Face Crisis At Center As Panthers Prepare For Lambeau
Tork Mason/Green Bay Press-Gazette
The Green Bay Packers enter Thursday night's game against the Carolina Panthers with a broken offensive line. Just days after a tough loss to Detroit, the team faces a critical shortage at center. Starter Sean Rhyan and backup Jacob Monk both left Sunday's game with injuries that could keep them out for the short week. This situation forces a young player to step into a high-pressure role right when the team needs stability the most.
Wendell Ferreira of A to Z Sports reported that Rhyan likely suffered an ankle injury, which typically takes a couple of weeks to heal. Monk dealt with a quad injury, making a quick return nearly impossible. With both veterans out, the Packers had no choice but to turn to John Williams. The second-year offensive tackle played 58 snaps at center in the last game. He yielded three pressures and had difficulty blocking, yet he managed the disorder more effectively than anticipated.

Coach LaFleur Praises His Effort
Head coach Matt LaFleur did not hide the difficulty of the situation. He admitted that Williams had only taken practice reps at center, not game snaps. Despite the lack of ideal preparation, the coach spoke highly of the young player's performance under fire. LaFleur continued to commend the young lineman's performance during that critical moment. "He's so intelligent, he's got great command and understands all the calls and why we're doing what we're doing," LaFleur said. The coach added, "Again, I can't commend him enough for the job he did stepping in in a tough situation."
The Panthers defense will test this new arrangement immediately. Carolina knows that Green Bay's interior line has been a problem all season. The guard spots were the main issue before the center injuries happened. Now the whole middle of the line is in flux. If Williams cannot hold up, the Packers passing game could stall out before the first quarter ends.
Who Steps in Next?
With Rhyan out and Monk unlikely to return, the team must look elsewhere. Jager Burton is the first name on the list. Hailing from Kentucky, the player selected in the fifth round is naturally a center. The Packers drafted him specifically to handle these exact moments. Throughout the regular season, Burton has exclusively played at guard thus far. All 89 of his snaps have come at left guard. However, he did play 23 snaps at center during the preseason. This gives him a real chance to start Thursday.

LaFleur confirmed that the team will evaluate Rhyan's situation on a long-term basis. That means Burton or Williams will likely start the game. The Packers have a short week to get this unit ready. They cannot afford another breakdown in the middle of the line. The Panthers will bring a tough front to Lambeau Field. If Green Bay cannot protect the quarterback, their chances of winning slip away fast.
The game starts Thursday, Oct. 29, at 8:15 p.m. ET. The Packers lost their last game 20-17 to Detroit. Now they face a Carolina team that just lost 43-13 to Tampa Bay. Both teams are looking to fix their problems. The Panthers need to score points. The Packers need to stop the bleeding on their line.
Fans should watch how Williams and Burton communicate on the field. The calls change fast. One missed block can cost the team the game. LaFleur trusts his players, but trust does not stop a 300-pound defensive tackle. The Panthers will try to exploit this weakness all night long. Green Bay must find a way to survive the chaos or their season could take another hit.
