The San Diego Padres got their latest East Coast road trip off to a rough start against the Baltimore Orioles as they lost the opening game, 7-3, with starter Griffin Canning giving up six runs in the first two innings to make the outcome a mostly foregone conclusion.
The Padres actually started well, getting a run in the first when Fernando Tatis Jr. reached on an error by third baseman Coby Mayo , then stole second. Gavin Sheets drove home Tatis with a double to give the Padres a 1-0 lead, but it didn't last long.
The Orioles came right back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI sacrifice fly from Adley Rutschman , followed by a two-run homer by Samuel Basallo to make it 3-1. San Diego scratched out another run in the second as starter Shane Baz struggled with his control and hit Ty France , then walked Will Wagner , with Tatis getting the run home with a single to make it a one-run game at 3-2.
That was as good as it got for the Padres, however. Canning gave up three more in the second on a sac fly by Jackson Holliday , followed by a two-run single from Pete Alonso .
That rally ended the scoring surge, and it basically ended the game for the Padres. The two teams traded single runs in the fourth and fifth, with the Orioles scoring in the fourth on a solo homer by Gunnar Henderson , and the Padres countered with a run-scoring single from Sheets to account for the final score of 7-3.
The win was the third in a row for Baltimore, and not coincidentally it was also the third straight game in which they've scored exactly seven runs. Canning took a well-deserved loss as he gave up all seven runs in a five-inning stint, and Baz got the win for Baltimore as he righted the ship to go five innings and give up three runs, two of them earned on six hits and two walks to go with a single strikeout.
For the Padres, this loss represented more of the same offensively, and it killed off some of the momentum from Tatis' game-winning, walk-off home run against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.
If you're looking for bright spots, both Machado and Sheets had two-hit nights, but other than that the Pads didn't have much going for them as Wandy Peralta and David Morgan finished up with a total of three scoreless frames. Game 2 is tomorrow afternoon, and the Padres with posts with Randy Vasquez against Trey Gibson for the Birds.
