The San Diego Padres designated Nick Castellanos for assignment on Wednesday. The surprising move was announced during the Padres' series against the Philadelphia Phillies — who happen to be Castellanos' former team . Before Wednesday's game, Padres manager Craig Stammen commented on the decision to designate Castellanos for assignment, via Dave Uram.
"We've kind of been talking a little bit about our roster and the flexibility that we'd like to have off the bench," Stammen said. "Maybe a little bit more speed, a little bit more dynamic players."
The fact of the matter is that Castellanos has to hit at a respectable level in order to receive a roster spot at this point in his career for a contending team. He doesn't offer much speed or defensive value. Through 39 games played, Castellanos has recorded a lackluster slash line of .191/.221/.339.
Nevertheless, it was likely a difficult decision for the Padres. Castellanos is a veteran with a proven track record.
"It was tough, Nick is such a pro," Stammen said of the conversation with Castellanos about the decision. "I've really enjoyed having him here in San Diego . We had conversations with him when we signed him that, you know, he was going to earn his playing time. It was probably going to be a different role for him, wasn't going to be an everyday role… Just decided to make a move and change the roster up a little bit."
Castellanos could certainly receive another MLB opportunity elsewhere. He is a two-time All-Star who still offers power from the right side of the plate.
