- Padres designate Spokane native Alek Jacob for assignment
Sep. 24—Relief pitcher Alek Jacob , a North Central High grad and Gonzaga product who has spent his entire pro career with the San Diego Padres organization, was designated for assignment by the club Wednesday.
Jacob's removal from San Diego 's 40-man roster opened a spot for reliever Jason Adam to return from the injured list.
Jacob, a 28-year-old right-hander, appeared in three games out of the Padres' bullpen earlier this year, spending most of the season with Triple-A El Paso. He gave up three runs on five hits in five innings of work with the big-league club and went 6-8 with a 5.58 ERA in 47 Triple-A games this year.
Jacob was drafted out of GU in the 16th round by the Padres in 2021. He made his MLB debut in 2023 and has appeared in 42 games with San Diego since, recording a 4.18 ERA in 56 innings.
Now, he's headed to waivers and could be claimed by another organization.
A couple of other pro pitchers out of GU were on the move recently.
Wyatt Mills was released by the Washington Nationals , who had claimed the Gonzaga Prep grad off waivers in early August.
Mills never appeared in a game for the Nationals. The 31-year-old had been on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A Rochester since mid-August.
Mills pitched in six games earlier this year for the Los Angeles Dodgers , allowing four runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings, then was designated for assignment on Aug. 3.
Eli Morgan was signed by the New York Yankees to a minor-league contract in late August and stashed at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for organizational depth.
Morgan, a 30-year-old right-hander, began the season in the Kansas City Royals ' bullpen and appeared in 16 games with the club, posting a 5.12 ERA in 19 1/3 innings. After bouncing between the majors and minors for a few months, Morgan was outrighted to Triple-A Omaha in mid-August and elected free agency.
