Fernando Tatis Jr. is one of the most electrifying players in Major League Baseball. He's turned into a superstar in front of the world as a 5-tool player.
During the final two games of the series against the Colorado Rockies , new San Diego Padres ' manager Craig Stammen slid Tatis Jr. down from right field to second base while both Xander Bogaerts and Jake Cronenworth earned days off. Stammen spoke on the decision after the game on Saturday night.
"We've been planning this for a little while. We've given him a heads up, trying to figure out a way to get Jake and Xander some days off coming up, and felt like Tatis was the best option at second base and the most fun and exciting option at second base. So, you know, get that kid smiling a little bit might help too," Stammen said, via 97.3 The Fan.
After Tatis Jr.'s two games at second base, MLB insider Jon Morosi appeared on MLB Network to talk about it.
"He can do it all," Morosi said. "Tatis is doing his best Mark DeRosa impersonation in terms of being able to play multiple positions all over the diamond. Sung-Mun Song is still on the Injured List, so they need someone who can back up Bogaerts or Cronenworth when either of them needs a day off. Until Song comes back, this will likely be the plan."
Tatis Jr. has been off to a slow start in terms of earning hits, but he has hit the ball hard, finding the barrel, and is finally seeing success because of it. In his two games at second, Tatis has five hits, including one double and one walk. He needs to improve his average and OPS, and the home runs will come. For now, the Padres need Tatis Jr. to be himself, which is the most important thing.
