The San Diego Padres have gotten off to a brilliant start this season in the National League West. As they took the field in Mexico City for their two-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks , they had a one-half game lead over the two-time defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers .
The Padres have gotten off to a razor-sharp 17-8 start even though superstar Fernando Tatis Jr. has not started hitting yet. Tatis is slashing .250/.327/.293 and he has yet to hit a home run while driving in 12 runs. Despite his slow start at the plate, he was given a gift by the local Mexico City fans of a doll in his own image, complete with the earring that Tatis has been known for wearing throughout his career.
Tatis said the series in Mexico City is exciting because the altitude (7,300 feet) lends itself towards multiple home runs and high-scoring games. “Hopefully we can give the fans some exciting, well-played baseball that features a lot of runs,” Tatis said in an interview with Yonder Alonso prior to the game on the MLB Network.
Padres pitching is ahead of the hitting
Even though the Padres have been playing winning baseball this season, their hitting attack has not hit its stride yet. Xander Bogaerts and Ramon Laureano are their leading power hitters with 4 home runs each. The Padres are waiting for Manny Machado to get going offensively as the third baseman has hit just 2 long balls and driven in 11 runs.
The Padres have gotten solid pitching performances from Randy Vasquez and Michael King . Vasquez has a 2-0 record with a 1.88 earned run average and 30 strikeouts in 28.2 innings. King is 3-1 with a 2.28 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 27.2 innings. Both pitchers have made 5 starts this season, and each hurler has given up just one home run.
