The San Diego Padres found themselves down 6-2 entering the bottom of the ninth inning in their Wednesday matchup against the Seattle Mariners . But then, Jackson Merrill came through…again.
After two straight hits brought the score to 6-5, Merrill hit a walk off double to send San Diego fans home happy with a 7-6 win. Both manager Craig Stammen and the outfielder knew the Padres would be unwilling to give up , via ESPN News Services and the Associated Press.
“We try to tell the guys every day, it’s not ‘if’ we’re going to win, but it’s ‘who’s going to be the hero?'” Stammen said. “Tonight, it was Jackson.”
“That is what a good team does,” Merrill said. “They don’t give up until the very last out.”
It wasn’t the first time on Wednesday Merrill put the Padres on his back. Trailing 3-0 in the top of the third inning, the center fielder leaped and reached over the wall to rob Mariners slugger Julio Rordiguez of a home run . It was a catch Merrill won’t soon forget.
“One hundred percent, that’s the best catch I’ve ever made,” Merrill said.
As they chase a deep playoff run, the Padres will be relying on Merrill in the batter’s box and in the field. Through the first 18 games in 2026, the former All-Star is hitting .261 with three home runs, 13 RBIs and four stolen bases. Furthermore, he has a perfect fielding percentage in the early going.
The Padres are hoping to not need as many five-run comebacks to win ball games. But if they do, they at least know Merrill is ready for the moment.
