Things can't get much worse for the San Diego Padres right now.
Despite returning home after losing three games on the road to the Philadelphia Phillies , the Padres had just three hits in a 5-0 loss to the New York Mets on Friday night in the new City Connect jerseys.
San Diego has now lost 10 of its last 11 games, and the Arizona Diamondbacks have now surpassed them to take over second place in the National League West.
It seems like forever ago that the Padres captured first place after a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in May, but things have gone downhill quickly in America's Finest City.
And, before the game on Friday, manager Craig Stammen revealed that outfielder Ramon Laureano is likely out for the rest of the season after he underwent hip surgery.
The timeline is anywhere from four-to-five months, and Stammen said there is a "chance" that Laureano plays again this season.
There's a chance," Stammen said, via AJ Cassavell of MLB.com . "Some guys have come back from this surgery quicker than it -- I think the typical timeline is that four-to-five month range."
But there is no sugarcoating it: This is a big loss for San Diego.
"It's a big loss," Stammen said, via AJ Cassavell. "This is a guy that we were counting on a lot coming into the season and a guy that we had batting leadoff for a while. He'd been in a little bit of a funk lately. Maybe [the injury] was the reason for it. Unfortunate that he had to go have surgery
Laureano started off the season red-hot, but he cooled down considerably and struggled in May, just like a lot of other Padres hitters.
Laureano is hitting just .203 with seven home runs and 21 RBI before landing on the IL.
The Padres also put reliever Jeremiah Estrada on the IL for the second time this season and recalled David Morgan from Triple-A.
Laureano was just placed on the 10-day IL a few days ago, and it's even more surprising that the surgery was announced, because veteran Nick Castellanos was released and designated for assignment earlier in the week.
Bryce Johnson got the start in left field on Friday, but he is hitting just .205 and he has never shown much promise at the plate.
The Padres did promote Jase Bowen and Samad Taylor , so perhaps those guys get more looks as San Diego figures out which direction it wants to go in for the rest of the season.
Gavin Sheets has played left field at times this season, and Fernando Tatis Jr. has alternated between right field and second base, but things took a bad turn with Laureano set to miss the rest of the season, barring a huge surprise.
