The San Diego Padres are witnessing an early season slump out of Fernando Tatis Jr. . Tatis himself admitted the early struggles . Well, SD pulled off a shocking decision ahead of facing the Colorado Rockies .
The franchise revealed Tatis moved to second base Saturday. Which pulls him out of his normal shortstop duties.
Here's more context on why this move is a stunner.
Tatis has started just once at second base throughout his career. Dennis Lin of The Athletic, however, explained why the Padres moved him to the infield.
"Fernando Tatis Jr., who sometimes takes grounders at second base, will make his first big-league start at the position tonight, with Nick Castellanos in right field. Tatis made one late-game appearance at second in 2023. He started 10 games there early in his minor-league career," Lin posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.
But the move perplexed some fans online, including one calling the team unserious .
"This can't be serious. We are taking a two-time platinum glove winner out of right field to play one of the worst defensive outfielders in the league out there. This team is so unserious," the fan responded.
Fans also called out manager Craig Stammen for making the decision to reassign Tatis.
The face of the Padres entered 2026 projected to smack 35+ home runs . Tatis also arrived into the MLB Season fresh off a strong World Baseball Classic run with Team Dominican Republic .
But he's delivered a dismal .189 batting average with chipping only 10 hits. He's struck out 16 times too.
