Pierre Sage was brought to SE25 for his football IQ, his tactical flexibility, and his commitment to attacking play. The core tenets of a system that brought him success (and silverware) at RC Lens still exist at Crystal Palace , but there have been growing pains in their consistent execution. Palace put numbers forward and commit to a high counterpress after losing possession, but their lack of a solid rest-defense structure has contributed to the Eagles ranking 18th in fast breaks conceded and 19th in goals allowed from fast break situations. However, without changing from their usual back three, a tactical tweak could solidify Palace's rest-defense without sacrificing their attacking intent or expansive patterns of play.
Any potential change must preserve the attacking principles central to Pierre Sage's system. Both wingbacks must maintain the freedom to push high and provide width - stretching the opposition horizontally and opening pockets of space for teammates. It is also pivotal that Palace continue occupying attacking half spaces, where players can connect wider threats with inside forwards through quick combination play around the box. Lastly, Sage's system requires an energetic central midfielder - typically Quenten Timber - to push forward, support attacks, and lead the counterpress immediately after possession is lost.
The issue arises when the wingbacks and central midfielder all join the attack simultaneously. When combined with the front three, they form a 6-man attacking shape, leaving just four in rest-defense and becoming vulnerable to counters. Keeping one wingback deeper or the central midfielder in a permanently deeper position may improve Palace's protection, but it would accomplish this by removing an important part of their attacking structure. Therefore, the objective is not simply to commit fewer players forward, but to find a structure that preserves these attacking principles without leaving Palace so exposed behind them.
In shifting their base shape from 3-4-3 to 3-5-1-1, Crystal Palace would not change much "on paper." The back line would still consist of three central defenders plus two wingbacks with license to push forward. There would still be a lone striker occupying central spaces. The primary change occurs between the midfield and forward line, where one attacker is replaced by an additional central midfielder. The remaining attacker would operate underneath and around the striker - having license to roam while serving as an outlet for knockdowns and flick-ons from the No. 9.
The base shape: 3-5-1-1 with a "roaming attacker" underneath the striker and a midfielder capable of stepping up to support attacks and initiate the counterpress
The 3-5-1-1 would allow Crystal Palace to more consistently reach the 3-2-5 shape they seek while in possession, but with one small - but important - tweak. Four of the "attacking five" would still consist of both wingbacks, a striker, and an attacking midfielder/roaming winger type. In Palace's current setup, the fifth player is an additional attacking mid/winger, with the supporting/counterpressing midfielder creating overloads as the "sixth attacker" - effectively changing the shape to a less-protected 3-1-6. In the 3-5-1-1 system, however, the fifth attacker would be the supporting/counterpressing midfielder himself - eliminating the need for a "sixth attacker" and keeping one additional player consistently in rest defense. This simple adjustment would greatly increase coverage and reduce the risk of conceding in transition while Palace's attacking intent would, theoretically, remain unchanged.
An attacking 3-2-5 shape: One that should look familiar to Crystal Palace supporters, but with more stability behind the attack.
With the energetic midfielder now accounted for within the attacking five, Palace would retain five players behind the attack in a 3-2 rest-defence. The outside centre-backs would protect the wide channels behind the advanced wingbacks, while the two holding midfielders would screen the half-spaces and central area atop the 18-yard box. If an outside centre-back is forced to step wide, the nearest holding midfielder can cover the space behind him while his midfield partner protects the middle and far-side passing lane. By remaining connected and shifting together, this five-player safety net could limit the "domino effect"—when one defender stepping out forces each teammate into an increasingly desperate rotation, eventually leaving an opponent unmarked in a goalscoring position.
With a proper rest-defense, attacking wingbacks would have time to track back and drop into a back five. The advanced midfielder would drop into a midfield trio, while the roaming attacker would form a front two with the striker. This front two would look to cut off central entries and direct play toward one flank. This shape allows Palace to pressure the opposition's first line of build up, while still providing coverage for the near-side wingback to step toward the ball without leaving excessive space behind. With two outlets high up the pitch, this shape is better suited for earlier defensive phases and aggressive counterattacking.
5-3-2: A defensive shape which is a bit more aggressive and could be utilized after losing possession high up the pitch
In deeper and/or more sustained defensive phases, a more conservative 5-4-1 shape can be utilized, as it sacrifices first line pressure for an extra body in organized defense. The holding midfield duo would maintain their central pairing but would be flanked by the advanced midfielder and roaming attacker, who would play wide midfield roles. This would add an additional body to each defensive flank and provide stronger coverage wide. The striker would continue to shield central entries while still providing an outlet to relieve pressure via hold-up play.
A 5-4-1 defensive shape could provide more rigidity by adding an additional player to the midfield line
Luckily, Crystal Palace have players with all the required skill sets for this system. In defense, Tyrick Mitchell and Anan Khalaili have shown their ability to get forward and create as wingbacks, while Ben Chillwell and Oscar Mingueza provide excellent depth in these positions. Palace's central defenders are already familiar with playing in a back three, as it has been their primary shape since February of 2024.
In midfield, Quinten Timber has proved capable of pushing forward to support the attack while serving as a catalyst for the Palace counterpress when possession is lost, but this role could also realistically be handled by Will Hughes, Daichi Kamada, or even Dwight McNeil. Adam Wharton and Kamada provide a familiar and comfortable midfield pairing, with Jefferson Lerma and (potentially) a healthy Cheick Doucoure providing depth in central areas.
In attack, Jean-Philippe Mateta is well-suited to play this striker role, but the reigns up top could also be handed to Jorgen Strand Larsen, Eddie Nketiah, or Ismaila Sarr playing centrally. The roaming attacker role is seemingly drawn up for Yeremy Pino. Pino's creativity and ability on-ball would make him an excellent outlet to initiate the attack and provide teammates with high-probability opportunities. Considering Pino's familiarity out left during his time at Selhurst Park, we can assume that he would play more in the left half space with the advanced midfielder pushing up into the right half space.
A realistic potential Starting XI for Crystal Palace in this 3-5-1-1 base shape
As with any tactical system, there are issues that could arise in switching to a base 3-5-1-1 shape. The dependence to provide width could lie solely on the wingbacks, which could isolate them in attack. However, this can be mitigated by intelligent positioning by Yeremy Pino and the advanced midfielder. Both could drift wide and create overloads in wide areas of the pitch, connecting wingbacks into the attack and creating space centrally for the striker - provided the opposite half-space remains occupied.
The recovery requirements of the 5-4-1 defensive shape could become demanding, as Pino and the advanced midfielder must track back wide. This risk can be lessened by coordinated triggers which would allow these players to recover to their spots proactively and not as a reaction to the opposition's build up.
The 3-2 rest-defense shape is not a "magic pill." It can still be exposed if players are not well-drilled and organized. Proper spacing, communication, and coordination are still required. Nevertheless, retaining an additional player behind the attack should provide Palace with greater coverage and reduce the number of emergency rotations required during transitions.
Considering Pierre Sage was appointed in the summer, asking the Crystal Palace squad to scrap their current system to learn their third new style of play in six months would be a tall task. Instead of starting from scratch, Pierre Sage should simply look to incorporate this subtle tweak into his existing tactical plan. The tenets of his philosophy - dual attacking wingbacks, aggressive counterpressing, quick combination play around the opposition box - would all still exist. What would change is the number of players retained behind their attack, potentially allowing Palace to maintain Sage's attacking identity while strengthening their defensive structure.
