The Florida Panthers didn't just win their season opener; they dismantled the defending Stanley Cup champions with a defensive masterclass that felt like a playoff game. In a 1-0 overtime victory against the Carolina Hurricanes , the Panthers proved their penalty kill is now the best in the league. This wasn't luck. It was a calculated, physical shutdown of a high-powered offense that left the home crowd in Raleigh stunned.
Shutting Down the Power Play
Carolina entered the game with the sixth-best power play in the NHL last season, yet they failed to convert a single opportunity. According to Sports Illustrated , the Panthers killed all six of Carolina's power-play chances, including a dangerous five-on-three advantage that usually spells disaster. With nearly 65 minutes of play elapsed, the stat sheet reveals the Hurricanes generated just 15 shots, underscoring the suffocating nature of the Panthers' defense. Forward Brady Tkachuk called this defensive effort something that "stirs the drink" for the team, and the numbers back up that bold claim. While the penalty kill was perfect, the team still faces a major hurdle: they won only 29% of their faceoffs while shorthanded, a stat they must fix before the long road trip begins.

Barkov Returns to Lead the Charge
The return of captain Aleksander Barkov added a layer of stability that the team desperately needed after an injury-shortened year. After not playing in a regular-season match since April 14, 2025, Barkov spent two minutes and 19 seconds on the penalty kill, proving his readiness for the grind. Defenseman Gustav Forsling led the team with five minutes and 37 seconds on the ice while killing penalties, eventually sealing the win with a one-timer goal with 4.3 seconds left in overtime. Forsling described the intensity perfectly, stating, "That felt like a playoff game to me. It was awesome, really fun." The Panthers' depth shone through, with Anton Lundell and Eetu Luostarinen also logging significant minutes to keep the pressure off their goaltender.
Goalie Jacob Markstrom was the final piece of the puzzle, making 15 saves and stopping a short-handed breakaway by Sebastian Aho . Markstrom praised the entire group, saying, "I thought we played a great game — everyone, the whole lineup." He added that "All four lines and all six D played really good, making my job a lot easier." This performance sets a high bar for Thursday night, when the Panthers face the San Jose Sharks . That squad features Macklin Celebrini , who racked up 33 points on the man advantage last season. The Panthers must stay out of the box to survive the next 81 games, but if they can replicate this penalty kill, they are already a force to be reckoned with. The road is long, but the start was perfect.
