With Sunday's competitive taunts becoming heated between the two budding rivals , Panthers coach Dave Canales stepped up and separated the combatants, pointing Lee away from the scene before a referee became tempted to throw another flag.
Canales later credited the 2026 fourth-round draft pick for his competitiveness during the Panthers' 25-14 victory at Lincoln Financial Field.
"Will had a great game," Canales said during his post-game press conference, per Panthers.com. "I thought, some beautiful pass breakups down the field, short and intermediate."

Panthers rookie Will Lee III playing beyond years
While beaten on a fourth-quarter touchdown pass by Smith and getting penalized twice for pass interference, Lee, making his second start in place of injured Jaycee Horn, mostly stood up against the fifth player to earn a Super Bowl title, college national championship and Heisman Trophy.
Lee surrendered 46 penalty yards as the team committed a franchise-record 146 off 13 calls. The rookie's inadvertent grab of tight end Dallas Goedert's pants , however, retains the potential to remain viral.
"He's getting penalties because he's challenging people. I'm fine with that. Can he work on having cleaner hands? Sure. Are you going to be a successful DB in this in the NFL if you don't use your hands? No, you're not. And I love the fact that he took the challenge.

"He stayed up there and pressed."
Lee, who helped limit the Eagles to 35 rushing yards, collected six solo tackles and two passes defended, yielding seven catches on 14 total targets. Smith finished with seven catches for 75 yards and the 19-yard score . Lee remained with Smith during the "go" route, but was beaten by an uber-athletic receiver and a well-placed throw by backup quarterback Tanner McKee.
"They were able to get a big touchdown later on in the game, but for the most part, that's exactly how you've got to play ball when you have your opportunities, get up there, challenge them, make them have to throw an accurate pass," Canales said. "So I was really proud of the way he played."
The NFC South-leading Panthers (3-2), who host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday , have won both outings with Lee starting in place of Horn.

With Horn (torn quadriceps) and Mike Jackson (groin) expected to remain sidelined for about another month, Lee and special-teams ace Akayleb Evans, along with sophomore Chau Smith-Wade, will be expected to play bigger-than-expected roles.
If Lee continues to impress, the Panthers could have an interesting decision to make with Jackson, who is wrapping up a two-year, $10.5 million deal. Evolving into one of the league's top CB2s, he could command a hefty raise after serving as a salary-cap bargain.

As MVP candidate Bryce Young continues to play himself into position for a long-term contract extension next offseason, Panthers general manager Dan Morgan could view Lee as a cost-cutter replacement for the pending free agent.

For now, Lee turned his attention to facing his next challenge: denying the Buccaneers ' top wide receivers, Emeka Egbuka and Chris Goodwin Jr. Dogged by questions at quarterback, the Bucs (1-5) could fall out of the conference race with a loss at Bank of America Stadium.
"I know I'm a rookie and I'm gonna make my rookie mistakes," Lee told Carolina Sports Live after the game, "but I wanna play like a vet and live up to the standard."
