The Carolina Panthers seem likely to shelve one of their starters ahead of 2026 training camp.
With spring workouts now behind us , Joe Person of The Athletic listed off some of Carolina's top winners and losers from organized team activities and mandatory minicamp. Leading off in the "Stock Down" category is defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton , who was unable to participate due to a recent neck injury.
Person wrote the following on the 28-year-old:
Wharton has had trouble staying on the field since signing a three-year, $45 million deal in 2024. The Super Bowl-winner with the Kansas City Chiefs played in only nine games in his first season in Carolina due to hamstring and toe injuries. Now he's rehabbing from offseason neck surgery, and watched the defensive line drills in street clothes during some of the OTAs. The Panthers expect Wharton to play this season, but haven't said when. Wharton is expected to be placed on the physically unable to perform list before camp.
Wharton underwent surgery on his neck back in May. While he is likely to miss at least a portion of the upcoming campaign, defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero told reporters at OTAs that he expects Wharton back at some point in 2026.
Unfortunately for Wharton, his first season in Carolina was underwhelming. Injuries to his toe and hamstring sidelined him for eight of the team's 18 games.
Panthers veterans are set to report to training camp on July 22.
