The Chicago Blackhawks are struggling mightily to start the 2026-27 NHL season, and things are going to get even more difficult without one of their most productive forwards.
Patrick Kane , who is second in team scoring with nine points in 15 games and leads the club with eight assists, left a 5-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Monday night with an upper-body injury.
Head coach Jeff Blashill told reporters that the three-time Stanley Cup champion is "going to miss the next couple of games , for sure," per NHL.com's Tracey Myers.

It wasn't clear exactly how Kane suffered the ailment; he left in the second period after playing a season-low 10:20.
The 37-year-old hasn't quite matched his production from past seasons, but he is still a key piece of the top six and an important veteran voice this season.
A Hawks team that is 4-10-1 and dead last in the Central Division will be hoping the Buffalo native can get back on the ice as soon as possible.
"We have to go see how he's doing, see if he's all right," linemate Frank Nazar said, per Myers. "I don't know what happened, if it was in this game, wish I saw it and done something. Obviously hope he's all right."
"It goes without saying, he's one of the heartbeats of this team, the guy we lean on so much, on and off the ice," captain Connor Bedard echoed. "The biggest thing is we just hope he's fine and hope he's ready to go as soon as possible. But it's a huge loss. He's Patrick Kane, so goes without saying and we hope he's back as soon as possible."
Kane is averaging just over 18 minutes of ice time per game, which ranks third among Chicago forwards behind Bedard and Roman Kantserov.
Overall, he's amassed 1,409 points (509 goals, 900 assists) in 1,384 career games with the Blackhawks, New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings.
The NHL's all-time leading American-born scorer signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the Hawks in June, and the franchise hoped he would be a key veteran piece in finally exiting the rebuild.
But it looks like Chicago is still a ways away from that, now losers of three in a row and six of seven dating back to Oct. 17.
Chicago will hope Kane's absence is brief, although Blashill hasn't confirmed a return date. The Blackhawks visit the Florida Panthers on Wednesday to begin a three-game road trip.
