SAN FRANCISCO — The Patriots have elevated a pair of players from their practice squad for Super Bowl 60.
Running back D’Ernest Johnson and defensive tackle Leonard Taylor have been called up for Sunday’s game in Santa Clara. One of New England ’s returners, Johnson is a candidate to catch the opening kickoff on Super Bowl Sunday.
Taylor, meanwhile, helped the Patriots punch their ticket to Levi’s Stadium. In an AFC Championship Game blizzard in Denver , Taylor got his hand on a potential game-tying Broncos field goal in the fourth quarter, blocking the kick.
A Jets castoff, Taylor signed with the Patriots in October and has appeared in six straight games, including all three playoff wins. Super Bowl 60 will now mark his seventh.
“I went from a losing team to a Super Bowl team, so it’s pretty great,” Taylor said. “It’s pretty amazing, just knowing that all the hard work I put in has finally been noticed and seen.”
Last month, Mike Vrabel explained how Taylor played his way onto New England’s game-day roster so frequently.
“Great attitude from day one,” Vrabel said. “Came in and worked hard on those Thursday practices and showed up, and then had a conversation and said that as soon as you can learn what to do, where to go and how to run the defense – we’ve decided he was ready, and then he took advantage of his opportunity. So, the first was getting recognized in practice, and then was learning what to do kind of midstream there. Maybe took him a week or so to do that where we felt comfortable bringing him up."
