Two of the Patriots ' key contributors left Week 2 with injuries.
First, starting right guard Mike Onwenu was carted off the field in the first quarter against the Steelers , leaving the game after T.J. Watt landed on the back of his legs.
Then, OLB Dre'Mont Jones also left with an injury, taken out in the second quarter with a shoulder issue. The Patriots ruled him out by the third quarter.
On Monday, Mike Vrabel offered the latest on both Onwenu and Jones. Here's what's known about their respective statuses.
Mike Onwenu injury update
On Sunday, ESPN reported that X-rays showed that Onwenu broke his right ankle in Week 2 against the Steelers.
On Monday, Vrabel said that Onwenu did suffer an ankle injury and he doesn't think the guard will "be available here in the short term," per Mark Daniels.
Vrabel also addressed how they may replace Onwenu on the offensive line, including the possibility of moving rookie Caleb Lomu to right guard.
"There's a lot of things that we could look at. Caleb has been trying to predominantly practice and be there and be ready to go playing tackle," Vrabel said. "We've got some guys that we can move in there, and Caleb would be one of the guys that could possibly do that."
Dre'Mont Jones injury update
Meanwhile, Vrabel said Jones' shoulder injury may not be as bad as feared.
"I don't know how he's gonna progress during the week. I know that he wasn't able to finish the game, obviously," Vrabel said. "He'll do everything he can to be ready, and if he's not then we'll have to have alternate plans."
It remains to be seen whether Jones will return for Week 3, but at the very least, his absence isn't feared to be long-term.
