Mike Vrabel saw his Pro Bowl cornerback elevate his game to a different level late in the season.
Christian Gonzalez had the game-sealing interception in Sunday’s AFC Championship win over the Broncos , and following the victory, Vrabel said he’d noticed “a different Gonzo” down the stretch.
“He’s been playing really, really good football,” Vrabel said. “Sometimes you get beat, the best ones do. About six or eight weeks ago, I can’t remember when, I saw a different Gonzo. I saw just — something went off and it changed.
“Maybe the Ravens game or something, I just noticed a different player, a different person. He’s so talented and I appreciate every one of them. He can certainly be elite. Your best players have to make those types of plays in championship games.”
On Tuesday afternoon in the media workroom at Gillette Stadium, Gonzalez smiled when asked about Vrabel’s comment. He remembers that conversation after the win in Baltimore , but still feels like the same cornerback.
“I don’t really pinpoint a change or anything,” Gonzalez said. “I feel like I’ve been approaching and preparing for each game the same. But I know what he’s talking about. After the Baltimore game, he said he felt like he saw something different.
“But I’ve just been preparing and doing what I’ve been doing. I just want to continue to make the plays that I need to make when my number is called and do what I’ve gotta do for this team to win.”
Amid the Patriots ’ run to the Super Bowl, Gonzalez has a forced fumble, a tackle for loss, and 15 total tackles to go with his interception in New England ’s three playoff wins. He’s been very active around the football.
