The New England Patriots announced that they signed former Las Vegas Raiders linebacker Amari Gainer to their practice squad on Wednesday.
Gainer was a former teammate of quarterback Drake Maye during his run with the North Carolina Tar Heels in the 2023 season. As a transfer from Florida State, he appeared in 13 games with the Tar Heels, recording 27 tackles, six tackles for a loss, 2.5 sacks, one forced fumble and two pass breakups.
"Yeah, I played with him my last year in college. He's a great guy in the locker room," Maye said, via Mass Live's Mark Daniels . "He's good on the edge. He's fast. He's played inside a little bit. He's played on the edge. He played inside at Florida State, if I remember, in college. He moved to the edge once he got to North Carolina. So, I know he was with Vegas, and it's good to see him back."
Gainer could add linebacker depth to New England 's defense, but most importantly, he comes with special teams value. During his run with the Raiders, he competed on 80 percent of the team's special teams snaps in 17 game appearances.
Given the Patriots' recent special teams struggles, that could end up being Gainer's best shot at getting on the field.
