- Patriots sign Oakdale's Dorner to practice squad
Cameron Dorner's bid to become the first Oakdale High School graduate to play in the NFL received a significant boost Monday when he was signed to the New England Patriots ' practice squad.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound wide receiver signed with the Patriots right after the draft in April as a priority free agent and then made enough of an impression during training camp and the preseason to stick with the team.
Over the course of three preseason games for New England , Dorner caught all three of the passes that were sent his way for 19 total yards. The longest reception he made went for 8 yards.
The Patriots cut Dorner on Saturday, two days after their final preseason game against the Cleveland Browns , and were able to bring him back to the practice squad after all of the teams had set their initial 53-man rosters and Dorner cleared waivers.
New England has six receivers on its initial 53-man roster.
Dorner joins Tuscarora graduate Jordan Addison of the Minnesota Vikings as wide receivers from Frederick County that are currently playing in the NFL. Jalen Huskey, who played part of his high school career at Middletown before transferring to Quince Orchard, made the Jacksonville Jaguars as a safety. The Jags drafted him out of Maryland in the third round this year.
After starring in football and basketball at Oakdale, helping lead the Bears to their first state title in basketball in 2022, Dorner enjoyed three productive seasons (75 receptions for 967 yards and nine touchdowns) as a top receiver and team captain at nearby Shepherd University (Division II) in West Virginia.
Then, wanting to raise his profile to catch the attention of NFL teams, Dorner transferred to Division I North Texas outside of Dallas , where he had a prolific senior season last fall with 56 receptions for 911 yards and eight touchdowns.
The Mean Green finished that season at 12-2 with a national ranking of 25. They narrowly missed out on playing in the College Football Playoff when they fell to Tulane in The American Conference championship game.
