The Pittsburgh Penguins opened the 2026-27 NHL season with far more than a routine victory. They overwhelmed the Philadelphia Flyers 7-0 on Wednesday, September 30, in Philadelphia, producing the largest road shutout in an NHL season opener.
The result was especially notable because Philadelphia had eliminated Pittsburgh in 6 games during the opening round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Penguins responded months later with a performance that left little doubt about which team controlled the night.

Pittsburgh received goals from 6 players, 2 from Nicholas Robertson, and a 19-save shutout from Arturs Silovs. Fourteen of the Penguins' 18 skaters recorded at least 1 point as the visitors controlled the game from the opening period.
Penguins make NHL history in Philadelphia
The 7-0 result immediately entered NHL history. According to OptaSTATS, Pittsburgh's victory became the largest road shutout in a season opener, giving the Penguins a record attached to an already dominant opening-night performance.
The Penguins also matched their own largest shutout victory against Philadelphia. Their previous 7-0 win over the Flyers came on March 19, 1988, meaning Wednesday's result connected the current roster with a notable franchise mark from nearly 4 decades earlier.

Pittsburgh's victory was also its largest season-opening win since the 1995-96 opener, when the Penguins defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 8-3. The latest performance therefore carried both league-wide and franchise significance.
Nicholas Robertson makes an immediate impact
Nicholas Robertson made an instant impression in his Pittsburgh debut, scoring twice against Philadelphia. His first goal opened the scoring at 7:26 of the first period after Kris Letang found him near the net.
Robertson added his second goal during the third period, converting a short-handed opportunity. It was his first short-handed goal in 7 NHL seasons, adding another milestone to a debut that already featured 2 goals.

The newcomer was part of an unusually balanced offensive attack. Filip Hallander recorded 1 goal and 2 assists, while Hendrix Lapierre finished with 1 goal and 1 assist. Ville Koivunen, Evgeni Malkin and Egor Chinakhov also scored.
Pittsburgh controlled the game from the start
Philadelphia struggled to establish possession early, while Pittsburgh quickly created pressure around the Flyers' net. The Penguins finished with a 38-19 advantage in shots, showing how consistently they controlled offensive territory.
The Penguins scored twice during the opening period before adding 3 more goals in the second. Malkin scored on the power play, while Lapierre and Hallander extended the advantage and left Philadelphia facing a 5-0 deficit.

Pittsburgh continued attacking instead of protecting its lead. Robertson's short-handed goal and Chinakhov's power-play redirection completed the scoring in the third period, giving the Penguins 7 goals on 38 shots.

Arturs Silovs delivers another opening-night shutout
While Pittsburgh's offense attracted most of the attention, Arturs Silovs quietly produced an equally important performance. The goaltender stopped all 19 shots he faced, earning his third career NHL shutout.
The performance also extended an unusual opening-night streak for Silovs. He recorded a shutout in the Penguins' season opener for the second consecutive year, following his 25-save shutout against the New York Rangers to begin last season.

Silovs did not face the same workload as Dan Vladar, but he remained perfect whenever Philadelphia created opportunities. The Flyers finished 0-for-3 on the power play, while Pittsburgh converted 2 of its 4 chances with the man advantage.
Flyers could not recover after early mistakes
Philadelphia's opening night quickly became a difficult test for coach Rick Tocchet. The Flyers trailed 2-0 after the first period and could not generate enough sustained pressure to slow Pittsburgh's attack.
Tocchet acknowledged afterward that Philadelphia failed to win enough battles for the puck. He also described the team's defensive-zone performance as the worst he had seen since taking over the Flyers, emphasizing the severity of the opening-night breakdowns.

The defeat was also significant from Philadelphia's perspective because the Flyers had entered the season after eliminating Pittsburgh in 6 games during the 2026 playoffs. Instead of carrying that momentum forward, they were shut out on home ice in the rematch.
Crosby, Malkin and Letang add another milestone
The Penguins' victory also produced a major milestone for Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. The longtime Pittsburgh core recorded its 494th regular-season win together, moving into first place among NHL trios.
Crosby began his NHL-record 20th season as Penguins captain, adding another landmark to a career that has stretched across 2 decades. His longevity remains one of the defining features of Pittsburgh's modern era.

Malkin also reached an important personal milestone against Philadelphia. His goal was the 534th of his career, moving him past Frank Mahovlich into 36th place on the NHL's all-time goals list.

The Penguins showed unusual offensive balance
One of the clearest themes from the game was Pittsburgh's distribution of production. Fourteen of the team's 18 skaters registered at least 1 point, allowing the Penguins to generate offense without relying on a single scoring line.
Hallander led the way statistically with 1 goal and 2 assists. Lapierre added 1 goal and 1 assist, while defensemen Kaedan Korczak and Samuel Girard each recorded 2 assists in the comprehensive victory.

That depth made Pittsburgh difficult to contain. Philadelphia had to defend multiple lines and could not focus entirely on Crosby, Malkin or Robertson, while the Penguins' defense also contributed to maintaining possession and creating scoring opportunities.
A memorable start with more tests ahead
The Penguins could not have asked for a more dramatic opening to the regular season. They entered Philadelphia facing a team that had ended their playoff run and left with a 7-0 victory, a shutout and an NHL opening-night record.
Still, one game does not determine an 82-game regular season. Pittsburgh's challenge now is to carry the same defensive structure, special-teams execution and balanced scoring into the games ahead.

The Penguins returned home Saturday for their 2026-27 home opener against the Montreal Canadiens and defeated them 6-5 in overtime. Philadelphia, meanwhile, dropped its next game 3-2 in overtime against the New Jersey Devils on Thursday, leaving the Flyers 0-2 to begin the season.
Fun fact:Arturs Silovs became only the fifth NHL goaltender to record shutouts in consecutive season-opening games. Only Glenn Hall and Jacques Plante have recorded more season-opening shutouts, with 3 each.
