Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson sat out practice Monday at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. The team reported he is ill.
Karlsson spent at least part of the third period on the bench Sunday in a 7-3 win at Chicago and played a season-low 15:49. There was no immediate explanation for that, but the report of his illness would seem to be the cause.

Karlsson's status for Tuesday's game at home against Carolina remains to be seen.
We hope to get some updates from coach Dan Muse after practice.
Before practice, injured players Evgeni Malkin and Filip Hallander worked out on the ice.
