Pittsburgh trailed Washington by three goals before mounting a furious second-period comeback, but the Capitals answered in the third to secure a 5-3 victory in Alex Ovechkin's final home opener.
Here are five things to know from Pittsburgh's loss.
Penguins' Mistakes Prove Costly
The Penguins made things much harder on themselves with a series of costly mistakes.
Washington scored just 23 seconds into the game after a turnover created a breakaway for Anthony Beauvillier. Penguins' Bryan Rust, in his season debut, answered back less than a minute after. The Capitals later regained the lead when Kris Letang's decision behind the net led to Tom Wilson's goal, and another Pittsburgh turnover helped set up Pierre-Luc Dubois' second-period tally.

The biggest problem wasn't simply that Pittsburgh gave up chances. The Penguins repeatedly handed Washington opportunities without forcing the Capitals to earn them. That made the 4-1 second-period deficit especially difficult to overcome.
Penguins Show Fight
For a team that had been thoroughly outplayed early, Pittsburgh's response was one of the few positives it could take from the night.
The Penguins scored twice in the final six minutes of the second period to completely change the feel of the game. Tommy Novak buried a rebound after Evgeni Malkin hit the post, then Nick Robertson redirected a Kaeden Korczak shot to make it 4-3.

Suddenly, Pittsburgh had momentum and Washington was under pressure. The comeback didn't ultimately produce a point, but it showed the Penguins could generate offense when they cleaned up their play and sustained pressure in the offensive zone.
Bryan Rust Gives Penguins Immediate Boost
Rust's return couldn't have gone much better individually.
After missing the first three games with an upper-body injury, Rust scored on his first shift of the season. He drove toward the net from the left side, fought through Ilya Protas and got the puck through Logan Thompson to tie the game 1-1.
The goal was important beyond the score sheet. Pittsburgh was able to get one of its veteran offensive pieces back into the lineup, and Rust immediately showed the type of net-driving presence the Penguins had been missing.

Of course, the rest of the game didn't follow the same script. Rust's goal was one of only three Pittsburgh managed, and the Penguins eventually dropped their second consecutive game.
Powe Plays Help Capitals Regain Control
The Penguins gave themselves a chance to complete the comeback but couldn't capitalize when opportunities came their way. They had three power play advantages and were not able to score on any.
After Pittsburgh pulled within one, Ryan Leonard scored 3:55 into the third period during a Washington power play. His goal restored the Capitals' two-goal advantage and took some of the momentum away from Pittsburgh.

That sequence mattered because the Penguins had finally put Washington on its heels. Instead of allowing Pittsburgh to continue building pressure, the Capitals converted on a key opportunity and forced the Penguins to chase the game again.
Crosby, Ovechkin Meet Again
The result wasn't the only storyline Wednesday night.
The game marked the 76th regular-season meeting between Sidney Crosby and Ovechkin, and it came just two days after Ovechkin announced that the 2026-27 season will be his last. Neither superstar recorded a point, but the matchup added another chapter to one of the NHL's defining rivalries.

It also was Ovechkin's final home opener at Capital One Arena. While Washington's captain didn't find the scoresheet, his team gave him the kind of result it wanted on a significant night, beating Pittsburgh 5-3 behind three points from Wilson.
