Penn State Nittany Lions fans saw a few of their players get drafted in the 2026 NFL Draft, including Drew Allar , who was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers .
He's a fun addition to the Steelers' depth chart, as he could learn from one of the best in Aaron Rodgers . He still has a lot of work to do, but he's shown some promise during the NFL preseason.
And after the second week of the preseason, Penn State fans will love to hear that Allar's odds of climbing the depth chart increased, as Will Howard , the former Ohio State quarterback, struggled, according to ESPN's Brooke Pryor .
" Mason Rudolph seemingly solidified his spot as QB2 without playing a snap as Will Howard struggled, and rookie Drew Allar failed to replicate his explosive preseason debut," Pryor writes.
While Allar wasn't overly impressive, finishing the day going 11-for-23 passing with just 110 yards, he didn't throw an interception, unlike Howard, who went 10-for-15 for 74 yards with two picks.
Allar did have a remarkable downfield completion, where, off his back foot under pressure, he layered a ball perfectly for 38 yards to tight end Lake McRee out of USC.
That play got fans excited, and justifiably so. That's the kind of play not many quarterbacks can make. Allar proved he could do it and showed the outlandish is within his wheelhouse.
After his preseason debut, he went 10-for-13 for 153 yards and two touchdowns, much better than Howard's 7-for-9 for 86 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.
Thanks to Howard, the former Ohio State QB, struggling in the second preseason game after a decent showing in his first game, Allar appears to have a chance to leapfrog Howard and become the Steelers' QB3 behind Rodgers and Rudolph.
He will have one more preseason game to showcase his potential, and it will be very interesting to see what Mike McCarthy decides to do.
But after being taken in the third round, it looks like the Penn State QB has a better chance to be QB3 than the Ohio State QB. At least, for now.
