Philadelphia Union has turned to its own academy system to lead a midseason rebuild, naming 37-year-old Ryan Richter as interim head coach and bringing back left-back Kai Wagner from Birmingham City in a €3.5 million deal.
The moves come as the Union sits dead last in the Eastern Conference with just seven points, 11 behind the final playoff spot. Richter, a Pennsylvania native and former Union player, replaces the fired Bradley Carnell and brings deep institutional knowledge from his years developing the club's youth players.
Richter's appointment represents a clear bet on Philadelphia 's development philosophy. He's worked directly with current first-team players like Cavan Sullivan , Quinn Sullivan , and Frankie Westfield through the academy system, served as Jim Curtin's assistant during the 2022 MLS Cup final run, and most recently coached Philadelphia Union II in MLS NEXT Pro.
At 37, Richter is actually younger than captain Alejandro Bedoya (39) and close in age to goalkeeper Andre Blake , potentially helping him connect with both veterans and the emerging academy graduates. He'll be supported by new assistants Ben Moane and Fred da Silva, with Henry Apaloo joining as performance analyst.
Kai Wagner's comeback addresses a critical need after his surprising departure earlier this year alongside Jakob Glesnes and Tai Baribo gutted the team's spine. The German left-back proved his European credentials at Birmingham City with one goal and three assists in the Championship, but Philadelphia paid roughly €1 million more than Birmingham's original fee to bring him back.
Wagner slots immediately into the starting lineup at left-back, with Frankie Westfield staying on the right and Nathan Harriel anchoring the center — giving Richter a more stable defensive foundation for the season's final stretch.
Making the playoffs remains a long shot with the Union 11 points out and limited games remaining. But the roster still features quality pieces: Blake and Bedoya provide veteran leadership, while the Sullivan brothers, Westfield, Malik Jakupovic, and Finn Sundstrom represent the academy's next wave.
More than chasing an unlikely playoff berth, Philadelphia's focus appears to be rebuilding confidence and recommitting to the development model that made them one of MLS's most respected organizations. With a homegrown coach and a familiar face back in defense, the Union at least has something that seemed impossible weeks ago: a clear direction forward.
