Leave it to John Kruk to ask the questions everyone really wants answered . The Phillies broadcaster turned a visit from a NASA astronaut into must-see television, quizzing Christina Koch about life in space during a recent broadcast on NBC Sports Philadelphia. True to form, Kruk steered the conversation toward the important stuff.
After Koch discussed her record-setting stay on the International Space Station and her historic Artemis II trip around the Moon, Kruk cut to the chase .
"Explain to the folks what rice pudding was like up in space," Kruk said.
Koch played along, explaining that astronauts do get rice pudding, just in dehydrated form. "It comes in a little bag, kind of like a Ziploc, and you rehydrate it and eat it out of the Ziploc bag," Koch said. She added that it is best rehydrated overnight and even better slightly chilled.
Then came the question that stole the show. "Do you all have beer up there?" Kruk asked.
Koch delivered the bad news for any aspiring space travelers. "No, we do not. Carbonated beverages do not do well without gravity," Koch said. "The bubbles do not go to the top, and that is not good."
The exchange quickly made the rounds online, a perfect blend of Kruk's everyman curiosity and Koch's patient, expert answers. It was the kind of moment that has made Kruk a fan favorite in the Phillies booth for years.
Koch was a fitting guest for the occasion. The Michigan native is a die-hard Philadelphia sports fan who has watched Eagles and Phillies games from space and even brought a Phillies jersey aboard the ISS during her 328-day mission .
Earlier this year, she made history as the first woman to fly around the Moon. On this day, though, she was just another Philly fan fielding questions about space snacks, and Kruk made sure to ask the ones that mattered.
