The Philadelphia Phillies have made their first offseason roster move.
Well, besides signing Don Mattingly to become the club's permanent manager.
On Thursday, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski announced that the NL East club has re-signed a veteran reliever.
The left-hander posted a 3.48 ERA and 1.12 WHIP across 60 appearances, including six starts.
According to The Athletic's Matt Gelb , Tim Mayza has signed a one-year deal with the Phillies.
Mayza joined the Phillies off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates last August. He spent the first seven seasons of his career coming out of the bullpen for the Toronto Blue Jays .
Mayza's 23.7% strikeout and 7.6% walk rates are both better than league average over his career.

But he's never cemented himself as a "dominant" reliever, mostly relying on a sinker to induce ground balls and fool hitters with a slider.
The Phillies used him as an opener in 2026 and could implement a similar approach next season.
If Mayza can continue to be effective against left-handed hitters, Philadelphia's bullpen will be better because of it.
