The Philadelphia Phillies had a doubleheader against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday after Wednesday’s contest was postponed due to inclement weather. After winning the first matchup 3-2 with a walk-off hit from Justin Crawford , the team managed to achieve an ultra-rare feat in the second game, not seen since 1985.
Reports indicate that the Phillies are the first team in 41 years to record a walk-off win in the first game of a doubleheader, to then begin the second game with a leadoff home run, according to Paul Casella of MLB.com. The last team to accomplish that feat was the Cleveland Guardians (then, Cleveland Indians).
“The Phillies are the 1st team to win Game 1 of a doubleheader on a walk-off, then hit a leadoff HR in Game 2 since Cleveland did it on Aug. 26, 1985,” reported Casella.
As previously mentioned, Phillies outfielder Justin Crawford recorded the walk-off hit to help the club earn the 3-2 win over the Giants in the first game by beating out the throw to first base. Meanwhile, shortstop Trea Turner went yard in his first at-bat of the second game, quickly giving Philadelphia a 1-0 lead to begin the contest.
While there was some speculation about the Phillies’ decision to fire Rob Thomson as manager, the team has seemingly played well in its first two games with Don Mattingly as the replacement. Philly entered the second game of the doubleheader with a 2-0 record since moving on from Thomson.
We’ll see how things play out for the rest of the campaign, as there is plenty of time for the Phillies to bounce back from their slow start to the season. This series against the Giants is a nice start to what could be a big turnaround.
