The Pittsburgh Pirates made a series of roster moves before Sunday's series finale against the Cincinnati Reds , activating infielder Spencer Horwitz from the 10-day injured list and adding newly acquired reliever Camilo Doval to the active roster. The club also optioned right-hander Isaac Mattson and outfielder Billy Cook to Triple-A Indianapolis to complete the transactions.
The moves come as Pittsburgh looks to strengthen both its lineup and bullpen with the National League Wild Card race still within reach.
Horwitz returns after completing a minor league rehab assignment following a left quad strain. Before landing on the injured list, the first baseman was batting .280 with a .386 on-base percentage, 10 home runs and 33 RBIs in 74 games, providing a consistent presence in the middle of the Pirates' lineup.
Doval joins the Pirates one day after being acquired in a trade with the New York Yankees . The former All-Star reliever brings late-inning experience after posting a 4.54 ERA with 39 strikeouts across 39.2 innings in 44 appearances this season.
Mattson and Cook were optioned to create room on the active roster. Mattson made 36 appearances for Pittsburgh this season, while Cook returns to Triple-A as the club reshapes its roster.

The Pirates entered Sunday with a 56-56 record, sitting third in the National League Central and trailing the first-place Milwaukee Brewers by 14 games. While the division remains a challenge, Pittsburgh continues to make roster adjustments aimed at remaining competitive during the final two months of the season.
Getting Horwitz back restores a key bat to the lineup, while Doval adds another experienced option to the bullpen as the Pirates attempt to finish the series on a positive note before beginning the next stretch of their schedule.
