The Pittsburgh Pirates snapped a five-game losing streak on Friday, by defeating the Cincinnati Reds 9-1. Pirates catcher Henry Davis blasted two home runs in the game. One of them came during a live broadcast interview with Pittsburgh pitcher Paul Skenes .
Skenes had a fun reaction to seeing his teammate blast a homer.
“We should do this more often,” Skenes said to his interviewers on the live broadcast, per Talkin’ Baseball.
Skenes and Davis are both former no. 1 overall MLB draft picks for the Pirates. Davis has had his struggles at the plate throughout his career. This season, he is hitting just .176, although his batting average improved after his powerful performance on Friday.
Davis has two home runs this season, which were both posted on Friday. The Pirates improved to 17-16 overall with the victory.
Pirates hope to make the MLB Playoffs in 2026
The Pirates haven’t made the postseason for more than a decade. Pittsburgh spent a lot of money before the 2026 season, to help improve the team’s offense. It has been a struggle for the team to score runs in recent years.
This season, Pittsburgh has been doing better on offense. The pitching though has taken a step back, as the Pirates bullpen has already given up several leads during the season.
The Pirates took a lot of anger out on the Reds on Friday. Pittsburgh had lost five in a row , including a four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals at home.
“I don’t know [what got into Davis], but I like it,” Pirates manager Don Kelly said, per MLB.com. “He had great at-bats, stayed through the middle. I think the second at-bat was really impressive, the at-bat in total. Being able to foul off that many pitches and stay on a slider and catch it out front and drive it to left.”
The Pirates look to take another game from the Reds on Saturday.
