Mike Clevinger , a veteran right-hander in the Pirates system, is expected to miss approximately six weeks with a right knee MCL sprain. The injury removes a notable depth option as Pittsburgh continues to evaluate its pitching staff during the early stages of the 2026 season.
The situation also places increased pressure on the organization’s development pipeline, as younger arms may need to step into larger roles earlier than anticipated during this stretch.
The setback comes at an unfortunate time for the club. Clevinger opened the year with Triple-A Indianapolis and positioned himself as a potential call-up option. His absence now forces the organization to lean more heavily on internal arms while navigating early rotation uncertainty. The Pirates sit tied for first in the NL Central at 11–7 and will aim to improve to 12–8 Thursday in the opener of a three-game set vs. the Washington Nationals .
At the same time, Anthony Solometo’s situation adds another layer of concern. The left-handed prospect is dealing with recurring shoulder pain and has returned to the injured list, continuing a troubling pattern that dates back to last season.

“Some Pirates medical updates:
Mike Clevinger has a right knee MCL sprain. Will be immobilized several weeks. Out roughly 6 weeks.
Anthony Solometo dealing with recurring left shoulder pain. On IL.
Edward Florentino (elbow) playing in extended games.”
While injuries dominate the club’s current situation, the Pirates must now navigate immediate roster challenges .
Managing these setbacks effectively will be crucial as the organization works to maintain early-season stability while safeguarding its long-term core.
