Angry Boston sports fans often take their complaints to the radio airwaves.
On Friday evening at Fenway Park, one of those gripes was brought into the air itself. Ahead of a game between Boston and Houston , a plane flew over the ballpark with a blunt message for owner John Henry.
“Fire Craig! Sell the team!” the banner read. It also had a logo for a gambling company.
Friday’s game is the first at Fenway since chief baseball officer Craig Breslow ’s purge of the coaching staff in Baltimore last weekend. The Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora and a slew of his lieutenants. They also removed franchise icon Jason Varitek, who had been serving as game planning and run prevention coach, from the dugout.
“Sell the team!” chants were heard throughout the ballpark in April, as fans voiced their displeasure with Henry’s perceived lack of spending. At the time, MassLive’s Sean McAdam opined that chances of Henry’s Fenway Sports Group selling the team were “slim to none.”
“The Red Sox aren’t the least bit incentivized to sell,” McAdam wrote.
Boston entered Friday’s game with a 12-19 record, occupying last place in the American League East. On May 1, they trailed the first-place Yankees by eight games.
