North Carolina 's 2026-27 roster is filled with newcomers, but the eighth installment of the annual Locked On Tar Heels basketball roster player preview series turns the spotlight toward one of the few players who already knows what it means to wear Carolina blue.
After previewing freshmen Maximo Adams , Sayon Keita , Malloy Smith and Kevin Thomas , followed by sophomores Matt Able , Neoklis Avdalas and Cade Bennerman , it is time for Isaiah Denis.

And Denis might be one of the most intriguing breakout candidates on Michael Malone's first UNC team.
The Charlotte native returns for his sophomore season after appearing in just 10 games as a freshman and averaging 1.9 points in limited action. A finger injury helped derail his opportunity to establish a meaningful role, making his freshman statistics (including just 14 field-goal attempts and eight 3-point attempts) largely irrelevant when attempting to project what comes next.
There were, however, encouraging signs behind the scenes.
Former Tar Heel Tyler Zeller recently told Locked On Tar Heels that Denis was at times giving UNC's starters problems while working with the scout team late last season. Jonathan Adams also pointed to the possibility of Denis becoming Carolina's first guard off the bench, a role that could make him an important part of the Tar Heels' rotation even without cracking the starting five.

Denis, who entered the transfer portal before ultimately choosing to return to Chapel Hill, now has a clearer pathway toward playing time. He will compete with veterans Angelo Brizzi and Jaydon Young for reserve backcourt minutes, but his offensive upside could separate him from that group.
The most obvious weapon is his shooting.
During the 2024 EYBL season, Denis ranked in the 92nd percentile on contested catch-and-shoot 3-pointers while connecting on 36 percent from beyond the arc on roughly six attempts per game. Adams described him as both a tough-shot taker and tough-shot maker with a smooth, repeatable jumper. Add Denis' speed and athleticism in the open floor, and his skill set appears well-suited for Malone's desire to play with pace.
The next step is turning those tools into efficient production.

At 6-foot-4 and 185 pounds, Denis still needs to show he can handle the physicality of ACC guards, defend consistently and finish through contact. His decision-making will also be important. Denis has occasionally played at one speed, attacking aggressively without always slowing down enough to make the correct read. Developing his secondary playmaking while limiting turnovers could further expand his role.
But Denis might not need to become a do-everything guard immediately.
His quickest route onto the floor could simply be becoming elite at one thing: catch-and-shoot 3-point shooting. Carolina will need perimeter spacing, and Denis should have opportunities for clean looks while playing alongside the Tar Heels' primary offensive weapons. If he combines reliable shooting with smart shot selection, transition efficiency and taking care of the basketball, Malone could have a difficult time keeping him out of the rotation.
The upside discussed on the podcast was a role resembling Seth Trimble's during the 2023-24 season: roughly 15-plus minutes per game as an impactful sixth or seventh man. Denis' floor might be more situational, deployed when Carolina needs an offensive spark, but both hosts believe his eventual role could trend closer to the higher end of that spectrum.

The bold predictions reflected that optimism. Adams predicted Denis will bury four 3-pointers and score 15 points in a UNC win over Arkansas, while Isaac Schade predicted Denis will lead Carolina in 3-point percentage among qualifying shooters. The episode set his over/unders at 12.5 minutes and 4.5 points per game, with both projecting roughly five points per contest.
Denis does not have to become one of Carolina's stars for his sophomore season to represent a major leap.
If "Zay Denny" develops into a dependable shooter, energetic transition guard and trustworthy reserve, he could provide exactly the type of backcourt depth a championship-caliber team needs.
After a freshman season in which injuries kept Tar Heel fans from truly seeing what Denis could do, 2026-27 should finally provide the opportunity to find out.
