PITTSBURGH —The Pittsburgh Steelers suffered another potentially significant injury, as safety Sebastian Castro missed practice on Tuesday.
Castro was not in uniform for the team's practice session during the portion open to the media, and was seen with his right foot/ankle in a walking boot.
That likely rules him out of the preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, and explains why the Steelers felt the need to add another player at the safety position by signing Brandon Hill earlier on Tuesday.
Castro's absence makes eight players in the Steelers secondary dealing with some kind of ailment leading up to the final preseason game.
Joey Porter Jr. (back) and Donte Kent (knee) remain on the PUP list. Jalen Ramsey (knee) and Brandin Echols (ankle) had their second practices back from his injury on Tuesday. DeShon Elliott (hamstring) played in the team's second preseason game against the New York Jets on Friday, but has taken part in just one of two practices this week. Jaquan Brisker (undisclosed) has not practiced in multiple weeks, and Israel Mukuamu was released with an injury settlement.
Sebastian Castro, Iowa Athletics
Castro first joined the Steelers in 2025 as an undrafted free agent out of Iowa. He was released last August and added to the practice squad. On Sept. 30, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed him from the Steelers' practice squad to their 53-man roster. He was released by the Bucs on Nov. 8, and the Steelers claimed him on waivers, keeping him on their active roster for the rest of the season.
He appeared in nine games total as a rookie, eight with the Steelers and one with the Buccaneers, playing exclusively on special teams. He made three total tackles.
The Steelers have been searching for depth behind Brisker and Elliott, the team's presumptive starting safeties. Castro has been in competition with veteran Rayshawn Jenkins , fellow second-year pro Jack Henderson and seventh-round rookie Robert Spears-Jennings for what might be one or two reserve roles at the safety position.
