The Las Vegas Raiders have found a dependable receiving weapon in tight end Michael Mayer, whose breakout season is producing some impressive numbers.
Through eight games, Mayer has already established career highs with 36 receptions and 351 receiving yards, surpassing his previous bests of 35 catches and 328 yards set last season.
But one statistic particularly illustrates his growing reliability.
According to Raiders.com , Mayer has caught 84% of the passes thrown his way this season, ranking third among NFL tight ends with at least 25 targets.
It's also the highest catch rate among Las Vegas tight ends, including All-Pro Brock Bowers.
The improvement represents another important step for the former Notre Dame standout, whom the Raiders selected with the 35th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Mayer's first three seasons were interrupted by injuries and personal challenges, and his opportunities changed dramatically when Las Vegas drafted Bowers in 2024.
However, the two tight ends have developed into complementary weapons in head coach Klint Kubiak's offense.
As previously reported , Mayer has established himself as the team's primary in-line tight end, allowing Bowers to line up elsewhere and create mismatches against opposing defenses.
Mayer's contributions have also earned praise from veteran offensive tackle Kolton Miller.
"He's gritty. He comes in and he makes big blocks, and he's done that for the majority of his career," Miller told Raiders.com.
"And now, he's really taking that next step. He's been making big plays and he just brings consistency and a hard work ethic."
The Raiders demonstrated their confidence in Mayer by signing him to a multiyear contract extension immediately before the regular season.
That investment is already producing results.
Mayer credited Kubiak's offensive system, offensive coordinator Andrew Janocko, tight ends coach Luke Steckel and quarterback Kirk Cousins for helping him reach another level.
His emergence has been particularly valuable for an offense that has struggled to generate consistent production from its wide receivers.
Through eight games, Las Vegas wide receivers had combined for just 803 receiving yards, their lowest total at that point of a season since 2010.
The Raiders' tight ends have consequently become an essential part of the passing attack .
With nine regular-season games remaining, Mayer has already delivered the most productive season of his NFL career, with an opportunity to build substantially on those numbers.
