There wasn’t a more polarizing selection on the first day of the NFL Draft than the Los Angeles Rams selecting Ty Simpson . The list of reasons why the pick didn’t really make sense was long, but one of the main ones is that Simpson had just one season of starts under his belt at the University of Alabama. He showed glimpses of being a good quarterback, but “No. 13 good” might’ve been a bit of a stretch. Despite his lack of experience, Simpson has confidence in himself , according to Adam Grosbard via X, formerly Twitter.

“The years that I sat were probably more important than the years that I played because I had to learn how to practice, I had to learn how to work,” Simpson stated.
Simpson was in Alabama for four seasons, attempting 49 passes over his first three. In 2025, he completed 64.5% of his passes, throwing for 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. It was a great single season, but his lack of experience will be a talking point heading into his rookie season.
The main talking point will continue to be the Rams’ use of a 13th overall pick on a backup quarterback who may not even be higher on the depth chart than Stetson Bennett . Los Angeles could’ve used the pick to upgrade the weapons around Matthew Stafford or upgrade their defense, but instead, drafted a potential third-string quarterback for the 2026 season.
For a team that has Super Bowl aspirations, it is one of the more puzzling draft decisions in a long time.
