The Los Angeles Rams still have a major quarterback decision to make ahead of their season opener against the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 8:35 p.m. ET (televised on Netflix). The Rams will start reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford , but Los Angeles faces a big decision behind Stafford .
The Rams could have former Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Stetson Bennett or Alabama Crimson Tide first-round pick Ty Simpson as their No. 2 quarterback. Both players made the Rams' 53-man roster. The race is close with both players putting together strong performances this preseason.
Los Angeles will have a third-string quarterback that will only play in an emergency situation (first two quarterbacks get hurt and can't return). Both players will likely not see snaps unless Stafford gets hurt. Bennett is currently the No. 2 quarterback on the Rams' depth chart, but he does not have much, if any separation from Simpson.
"I've already told you guys, we look at it as two guys," Rams coach Sean McVay said. 'I'll tell you when I decide who is going to be the actual two in the game.
"I've talked to the players about it, but that's something that they're both going to continue to train regardless of who it ends up being up and who is the emergency third. I look at it as both of those guys are going to play, but you saw, we listed Stetson as the two, Ty as the three. But I look at it as the 2A, 2B and we'll see how we approach the game."
The Rams are treating the QB2 job differently than last season, when Los Angeles had Jimmy Garoppolo as the backup for ever meaningful game with Stetson Bennett being the No. 3 quarterback. Garoppolo is no longer part of the equation for the Rams.
Both Bennett and Simpson will get practice reps as the Rams try to develop both players. The Rams certainly invested more in Simpson, so it would not be surprising for him to see a larger practice workload as the season goes on. McVay adds that he feels "really good about both" Bennett and Simpson. If the Rams don't announce a backup quarterback in the next day-plus, then we'll find out 90 minutes before kickoff when Los Angeles announces their active roster.
