The Los Angeles Rams have two intriguing wide receiver trade targets to consider ahead of the NFL trade deadline: Jacksonville Jaguars wideout Brian Thomas Jr. and Indianapolis Colts receiver Josh Downs. Both could provide a boost to Sean McVay's offense, but they offer different solutions to the Rams' needs.
Thomas represents the higher-upside investment , while Downs could be the more affordable option for a team looking to strengthen its receiving corps without sacrificing significant draft capital.
1. Similarities between Liam Coen and Sean McVay's offenses
Thomas already operates in an offensive system influenced by McVay's coaching tree. Jacksonville head coach Liam Coen previously worked under McVay in Los Angeles, giving Thomas experience in a scheme with familiar concepts , terminology and route combinations. That could help ease his transition to the Rams.
2. An X-type wide receiver
At 6-foot-3, Thomas offers the size, length and athleticism to become a true outside receiver. Los Angeles could use him as an X receiver capable of winning against press or zone overage, stretching the field and creating mismatches on the perimeter. His presence would give Matthew Stafford another dangerous downfield option.
3. Future control with his contract
Thomas is still on his rookie contract, giving the Rams multiple years of team control beyond the current season. Acquiring a young receiver with his physical tools and long-term upside could be more than a short-term rental, potentially allowing Los Angeles to build its receiving corps around him for years especially with Davante Adams on an expiring contract.
1. Inexpensive acquisition
Downs could be the more financially and draft-capital-friendly target. If Indianapolis is willing to move him, the Rams may be able to address their immediate needs without paying the premium likely associated with Thomas.
2. Separation ability
Downs excels at creating space, particularly from the slot. His quickness and route-running ability could give Stafford a reliable option against man coverage and provide an answer when opposing defenses pressure the quarterback.
3. Hands
Downs has a better drop rate, making him a more reliable target when the ball comes his way. His ability to consistently secure catches would give Matthew Stafford another dependable option, particularly on crucial third downs and in high-pressure situations.
Who's your preference if you were Les Snead? Brian Thomas Jr or Josh Downs?
