Following a tryout on Tuesday, the Baltimore Ravens have officially brought in linebacker Michael Barrett .
Barrett has a big connection to head coach Jesse Minter, as the linebacker played two seasons with Michigan during Minter's tenure, which were the 2022 and 2023 seasons. The linebacker also won a national championship with Minter during the 2023 season.
Barrett started in all 15 games during the 2023 season and secured 65 total tackles and three sacks.
Following his collegiate career, Barrett was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the seventh round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He would go on to join many practice squads in the 2024 season, including playing for the Seattle Seahawks , Green Bay Packers , and Cleveland Browns .
During the 2025 season, Barrett was on the Las Vegas Raiders practice squad.
Bennett has not yet played in regular season game in the NFL.
After his stint in the NFL, the linebacker would then join the UFL, initially playing for the Birmingham Stallions in 2026 and then the St. Louis Battlehawks.
Barrett appeared in seven games with the Battlehawks, securing 10 total tackles and one sack.
The Ravens brought Barrett in to act as depth as they are set for their third and final preaseason game. Current inside linebackers Teddye Buchanan and Carlos Jones Jr. are both dealing with injuries that have kept them out.
Buchanan is still ramping up from the ACL tear that occurred at the end of the 2025 season. Despite being removed from the PUP list, the second-year linebacker is likely a bit away from engaging in full contact.
Jones also has an undisclosed injury that kept him out of last week's joint practices with the Minnesota Vikings and the second preseason game. He has returned to practice but has not engaged in team drills just yet.
With a lack of depth, the Ravens clearly need some players out on the field as they take on the Washington Commanders in their third and final preseason game.
Barrett may or may not be added to the practice squad and/or the 53-man roster, but he has a long shot to make the latter. Preseason is a time in which coaching staffs take a look and evaluate the backend of the roster to ensure that depth is in a healthy place.
With Buchanan and Jones still out with injuries, the team simply needs to have some defensive pieces to utilize before the roster cutdown date happens on Aug. 30.
