The Tampa Bay Rays are making a bold move to clear the deck for their young core. Per MLB Trade Rumors , the club officially declined mutual options on outfielder Cedric Mullins and pitcher Nick Martinez. This decision sends both players to free agency just days after the team fell short in the World Series. It is a stark shift for a franchise that reached the Fall Classic in 2026, but the front office sees a path forward that requires letting go of veterans who underperformed.
This is not a panic move. It is a calculated bet on the future. The Rays posted a 98-64 record this season and topped the Yankees and Guardians to win the American League pennant. They only lost to the Brewers in the World Series. Erik Neander, the president of baseball operations, and manager Kevin Cash must now determine how to allocate their restricted funds. Keeping Mullins and Martinez would cost the team millions in guaranteed salary for players who showed clear signs of decline.
The data supports the Rays' choice to walk away. According to MLB Trade Rumors, Mullins ended the 2026 season with a .205 batting average and a 76 wRC+, which is well below the league average. His on-base percentage sat at .284 while his slugging percentage was just .344. These are not the numbers of a star player. He hit only 15 home runs, down from 17 the year before. His walk rate also dropped to 8.6 percent. The offense simply did not show up when it mattered most.
Defensive skills kept Mullins on the roster for a while, but even those have limits. He earned six Defensive Runs Saved and 11 Outs Above Average last season. Yet, the Rays have Jonny DeLuca ready to take over center field. Jacob Melton, acquired in the Brandon Lowe trade, could also push for playing time if he stays healthy. Melton played only 50 games in 2026 due to injuries, but his potential is high. The team would rather gamble on Melton than pay a premium for a fading veteran.
Left-hander Nick Martinez also faces an uncertain future after the Rays declined his option. Reports indicate that Martinez had already turned down his end of the mutual deal before the team made their official announcement. This means the buyout money is already set aside. The Rays signed him to a one-year deal last offseason as a low-risk, high-reward move. He was meant to be a bridge, not a cornerstone.
The free agent market for pitchers is crowded this year. The Rays have other arms to consider for their rotation. They hold a $20 million club option on Drew Rasmussen, which they will almost certainly pick up. They also have a $10 million mutual option on Cedric Mullins that they have already bought out. The team must now weigh these costs against the need to keep their young stars like Yandy Díaz, who is under contract through 2027 with a $13 million guarantee.
The Rays are built to win now, but they are also built to survive the next decade. They will not hoard aging players who drain the payroll. The leadership group remains intact, with Neander and Cash returning for 2027. They know how to build a contender with limited resources. Dropping Mullins and Martinez frees up cash to address other needs. The team can now look at the weak free agent market for center fielders and find a better value than what Mullins offered.
This move signals that the Rays are serious about their 2027 championship hopes. They are not afraid to cut ties with players who no longer fit the vision. The cost of a $10 million option for a player with a .205 average is too high for a team that needs every dollar to work. The Rays have shown they can win with youth and depth. They will rely on that again next year. The clock is ticking on the 2027 season, and the roster is already taking shape.
