FAYETTEVILLE Ark. - It seems like this time of year, there's a quota on how many times coaches must say "iron sharpens iron" to their players.
Well, that little bit of wisdom in Proverbs endures because, in the best of times, it proves true.
That's the case for the Arkansas Razorbacks' receivers, according to redshirt sophomore wideout Courtney Crutchfield. The Pine Bluff native has playmaking talent, as evidenced by his top-3 state prospect rankings in 2024.
After a redshirt year at Missouri and light production at Arkansas last year, Crutchfield is turning a lot of heads in camp . He's seen as a player who could make some big plays for the Razorbacks this year.
Maybe most encouraging thing for Crutchfield and the Hogs' pass catchers is the way camp is going so far.
"Man, the energy is through the roof," Crutchfield told the Razorback Daily . "We come in every day ready to work. [Wide Receivers] Coach [Larry] Smith challenges us every single day on the details: running precise routes, attacking the football at its highest point and especially ball security. We know that if you don't take care of the ball, you're not going to play."
It's especially important that camp creates opportunities for the team to bond this season. The transfer surge has almost completely turned over the roster while a new head coach works to build a foundation for his tenure.
Thankfully, the receivers Silverfield has to work with are like the proverbial basketball team in the receiver room. The variety of body styles and playstyles offers enticing ways to attack defenses and create plays against tough defenses.
"Having guys like Chris Marshall, CJ Brown, Jamari Hawkins and Jelani Watkins in the room pushes everybody," Crutchfield said. "We aren't competing against each other in a bad way. We're pushing each other to get better so that on Saturdays, whatever defense lines up against us, we're ready to roll ."
Trying to match up with a medley of different-sized receivers can be even more difficult when the madman calling plays, Offensive Coordinator Tim Cramsey, has his guys in up-tempo. That's something Hogs fans should get used to. When the offense finds rhythm, Cramsey likes to push the envelope.
"It's fast, but it's fun," Crutchfield said. "Coach Cramsey puts us in positions to make plays in space. With KJ and AJ, both of those guys are great leaders. They put the ball where it needs to be, whether it's timing throws on the sideline or giving us a chance deep downfield ."
Crutchfield's 6-feet-2-inch, 187-pound frame allows him to high-point balls, as well as outrun DBs. He's got God-given gifts, but it's the mental part of the game that he's focused on.
"My main focus has just been locking into the playbook, understanding the 'why' behind every concept and doing whatever the coaches need me to do," Crutchfield said. "Whether that's blocking on the perimeter or making big plays downfield ."
Maybe that's how these players can make each other better most effectively: don the dirty work for each other. Get downfield and block. Time your routes to help your fellow receivers in the concept. There are several ways that talent at the top of the receiver room can open up opportunities for those lower on the totem pole.
