Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran is not playing on Tuesday against the New York Yankees despite the fact that right-handed pitcher Luis Gil is on the mound. Left-handed starter Max Fried is set to pitch on Wednesday for the Yankees, so Duran may also not play in that game as well. Manager Alex Cora explained his decision by addressing Duran’s recent performance, via Ian Browne of MLB.com.
“Chasing pitches, early on he was taking walks and now he’s chasing, we’ve got to make sure we swing at the right ones,” Cora said. “As a group we did a good job yesterday, controlling the strike zone, putting the ball in play. We just got to keep continuing to do that.”
The Red Sox have been an underachieving team so far. Injuries have played a role in their underperformance, but a number of players are also not meeting their expectations on the field.
Duran, 29-year-old outfielder, is hitting just .164/.243/.254 across 17 games played in 2026. The Red Sox still believe in the 2024 All-Star, but Cora clearly has not been a fan of his at-bats in recent action.
Duran is in the 24th percentile in chase percentage this year. He is swinging and missing at an alarming 40.2 percent rate, which places him in the second percentile for whiff percentage.
Perhaps a couple of days off will help Duran to reset. There is a chance he could end up pinch-hitting of course. Either way, Jarren Duran is looking to turn things around sooner rather than later.
