FORT MYERS, Fla. — Prospect Tyler Uberstine will start the Red Sox ’ first spring training game against Northeastern at 1:05 p.m. on Friday.
“Intriguing,” manager Alex Cora said about Uberstine. “Different arm angle, throws a lot of strikes.”
Boston added Uberstine to its 40-man roster in November , protecting him from the Rule 5 Draft.
Non-roster invitees Wyatt Olds, Noah Song and Jeremy Wu-Yelland also are scheduled to pitch against the Huskies.
Uberstine, a 26-year-old righty, posted a 3.58 ERA in 25 outings (21 starts) for Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester combined in 2025. Nineteen of his outings came with Worcester.
He wasn’t recruited out of high school, having pitched just seven innings as a senior . The Red Sox ’ 2019 19th round draft pick throws a mid-90s fastball, a cutter, a sweeper and a changeup.
Wu-Yelland is a left-handed reliever to watch this spring. MassLive featured him Wednesday morning .
The 2020 fourth-round draft pick posted a 3.18 ERA, .193 batting average against and 37% strikeout percentage in 34 innings with Portland last year.
The Red Sox begin Grapefruit League games Saturday when they play against the Twins across town and then host the Rays on Sunday.
Boston has yet to announce its probable starters for those two games.
