The Boston Red Sox are gearing up for a matchup against their arch rival New York Yankees on Sunday. However, starting pitcher Brayan Bello won't be with his teammates in the dugout.
The Red Sox previously decided to demote Bello to Triple-A. The right-hander admits it was an emotional moment when he found out Boston 's decision, via Avery Hill of the Boston Globe.
"The trip right now in New York is a family trip, and we were all set up to get ready to go up there," Bello said. "When I got the unfortunate news, I shed some tears, got a little emotional"
Bello has struggled mightily throughout the 2026 season. In his first 12 appearances, the righty holds a 6.34 ERA and a 44/24 K/BB ratio. His 43 runs lead the American League. Furthermore, Bello didn't give the Red Sox much of a choice in his last outing.
Facing off against the Baltimore Orioles , Bello pitched five inning, allowing eight earned runs on seven hits and three walks. Six of those runs came in the first inning.
The Red Sox are well aware of what Bello brings to the table, which is why they signed him to a six-year, $55 million extension in 2024. During the 2025 season, he put up a career-best 3.55 ERA alongside a 124/59 K/BB ratio. Bello's entire five years in Boston has led to a 4.32 ERA and 508/219 K/BB ratio.
Things have clearly not gone right during the 2026 season. Bello is clearly upset about his demotion, but the Red Sox will hope he uses it as an opportunity to find his footing.
